Most people weighing treatment have the same handful of worries and unknowns rattling around. This page works through them plainly, and points you to the fuller answer wherever there is one. Skip to whatever is actually on your mind.
St. Louis Mental Health treats adults 18 and older, on our St. Louis campus and across Missouri by secure video. If what you are wondering is not below, call (314) 237-4435 or use our Contact Us page, and a person will answer it.
In a crisis right now? This page is not the fastest way to get help. Call 911 for an emergency, or find support lines you can reach immediately on our Crisis Hotlines page.
Yes. There is no severity you have to reach first, and feeling like it is not bad enough is one of the most common reasons people wait far too long. If something is affecting your life enough that you are asking the question, that is reason enough to call. The assessment is what sorts out whether, and how, we can help.
Of course, and many first calls are exactly that: someone gathering information while they think it over. You will not be pushed toward a decision you are not ready for, and asking costs you nothing.
That is worth telling us, not a reason to stay away. Treatment is not a single thing, and a different approach, a different intensity, or simply a better fit can change how it goes. Understanding what has and has not worked for you before is part of the assessment.

A short, private conversation, by phone or through our form, about what is going on and what you are hoping for. You share only what you want to, you can ask us anything, and nothing is decided on the spot.
No, you can come with nothing but questions. The clinical assessment on our Admissions Process page is what establishes the diagnosis and the right level of care. If you would like an early read first, our Online Assessment is a private place to begin.
A licensed clinician makes that call after the assessment, weighing what you’re dealing with against how much structure it actually calls for. It isn’t left to a form or to you to figure out alone. From there, the recommendation lands somewhere in our range, from outpatient sessions up to full residential treatment.
When the assessment shows an urgent need and a bed or slot is open, some people start the same day. When it isn’t immediate, we lock in the earliest date we can stand behind clinically and keep you in the loop until then. One call is all it takes to hear where you’d fall.
It means we do not hold a contract with your insurer, but many plans still pay a real share of out-of-network care. What yours pays comes down entirely to your policy, which our Insurance Verification page can check in a few minutes.
We confirm your benefits and explain your likely costs before your first appointment, in plain terms, so the bill never arrives as a surprise. Start on our Insurance Verification page, or ask us by phone.
You still have options worth talking through. We will show you what your plan does cover, and where it falls short, self-pay is on the table. Cost should be a conversation, not the end of one.
Five, all delivered by one clinical team:
Living on campus for the most intensive, fully supported care.
Structured treatment several days a week while you live at home.
The same structured program by secure video, anywhere in Missouri.
A steadier step for people leaving a hospital stay.
Ongoing connection and support once formal treatment ends.
Residential care means living on campus for a stretch, with support close by. Outpatient programs like our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and Virtual IOP let you keep living at home and come in for structured sessions. Which one fits is a clinical decision, and people often move from one to the other as they progress.
Yes. Virtual IOP runs the full curriculum over secure video, taught by the same clinical team that leads it on campus, and it’s open to anyone across Missouri. Being able to log in from home is often what turns “someday” into a start date.
Support does not stop at discharge. Aftercare & Alumni Support keeps you connected once the intensive stage ends, and if you are arriving from a hospital stay, Post-Hospitalization Residential Care is a steadier place to land first.
That shift is built into how we work. One clinical team oversees every program, so moving up to more support or down to less is a handoff within your own plan, handled by people already familiar with your history rather than a fresh set of intake questions.
A mix chosen for your situation from the approaches on our Therapy Options page, spanning evidence-based talk therapies and holistic methods. It is matched to what the research supports for you, rather than assigned by default.
Most plans blend the two. One-on-one sessions build a confidential relationship with your clinician – group work surfaces insight and practice that only come from being around others working through similar things. How the two split depends on your program and where you are in it.
Yes. Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Yoga Therapy, and Meditation run alongside talk-based work, because different people respond to different things.
For a lot of people, yes. Outpatient hours are set with jobs and classes in mind, and Virtual IOP drops the drive time altogether. During the assessment we factor your commitments in alongside the clinical picture, not after it.
Yes. Confidentiality holds from your very first phone call, governed by HIPAA, and your information stays with the clinicians directly handling your care and no one else.
Our campus is pet-friendly, so ask about bringing a pet when you arrange your stay. For everything else, our What to Bring page lays out what to pack by situation.
Yes, and many first calls come from exactly that. We can talk it through with you and coordinate directly with your loved one, within the limits of consent, since the decision to enter care is ultimately theirs. Our Family Resources page goes deeper on supporting someone, including when they are not ready yet.
With the patient’s consent, in ways that range from progress updates to family therapy where it helps. Our Family Resources page covers how families take part, and how to look after themselves in the process.
Call us any hour for a direct conversation about fit and timing. You are welcome to review the approaches we use on our Therapy Options page beforehand.
These answers hold whether you would come to our St. Louis campus in person or join from across the state, from the metro out to Springfield, Columbia, and the smaller towns between, through Virtual IOP.
If your question is not on this page, it is worth asking out loud. Call (314) 237-4435 or reach us through our Contact Us page, and we will give you a straight answer with no runaround.
