Patient Guides at St. Louis Mental Health

Starting treatment, or helping someone else start, comes with a lot of practical questions, and the answers are often easier to take in on paper, at your own pace, than in a single phone call. Our patient guides are plain-language resources you can read or keep on hand, covering the parts of care people most want to prepare for.

This library will grow over time. If what you need is not here yet, you never have to piece it together on your own; call (314) 237-4435 or reach us through our Contact Us page and just ask.

If you are in crisis right now, this page is not the fastest way to get help. Call 911 in an emergency, or see our Crisis Hotlines page for lines you can reach immediately.

How to use

How to Use These Guides

A guide can help you prepare, set expectations, and feel less in the dark, but it is a starting point rather than a diagnosis or a treatment plan. What is right for you is worked out with a clinician who understands your situation. If something you read raises a question, treat that as a good reason to reach out rather than a problem to solve alone.

what you need

Cannot Find What You Need?

The library is still filling in, so if the guide you are after is not here yet, ask us directly. Call (314) 237-4435 or reach us on our Contact Us page, and we will point you to the right resource or simply answer the question. Wherever you are in Missouri, near our St. Louis campus or joining care from elsewhere in the state, the same help is a call away.

FAQ’s

Patient Guides FAQs

What are patient guides?

Plain-language resources that walk you through common parts of treatment, from getting started to what happens afterward. They are free to read, and you can return to them whenever you need a refresher.

Do I need to read these before starting treatment?

No. They are here if you find them useful, not a requirement. Our team walks you through everything as you go, whether or not you have read a word beforehand.

Do the guides replace talking to a professional?

No. They are informational only and cannot stand in for an assessment with a clinician who knows your situation. Use them to prepare, then let a conversation fill in the rest.

Where can I get help understanding what treatment will cost?

Our Insurance Verification page is the place to start. We will check your specific plan, at no cost, and explain what you would pay before you decide anything.

Which guide should I start with?

It depends on where you are. If you are getting ready to begin, our Admissions  Process page walks through the first steps; if you are supporting someone else, Family Resources is the place to start. As more guides are published, they will be organized so the right starting point is easy to spot.
